Just a short drive or bus ride from downtown Indianapolis on 152 acres of gardens and grounds, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is the fifth largest general art museum in the United States, with a collection of more than 50,000 works that spans a wide range of cultures and eras. In 2005, the Indianapolis Museum of Art reopened following a $74 million expansion that doubled its size, increased exhibition and gallery space and expanded visitor amenities.
Oldfields - Lilly House & Gardens
A National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Oldfields - Lilly House & Gardens is an elegant 26-acre estate on the grounds of the IMA. Lilly House is a historic house museum and has been restored to its 1930s splendor. Percival Gallagher, of the acclaimed landscape architecture firm Olmsted Brothers, designed Oldfields' magnificent gardens and grounds in the 1920s.
Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park
Slated to open in fall 2009, the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park will be one of the largest museum contemporary sculpture parks in the United States as it is located on 100 acres of untamed woodlands, wetlands, lake, and meadow adjacent to the IMA. Ten inaugural artists have been selected to create site-specific works for the Park, which will open with installations by Haluk Akakce, Atelier Van Lieshout, Kendall Buster, Sam Easterson, Peter Eisenman, Alfredo Jaar, Los Carpinteros, Tea Makipaa, Mary Miss, Type A, and Andrea Zittel.
The Museum is open Tues.-Sun., 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thurs.-Fri., 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed Mon., Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. General admission is free. Gardens and grounds open daily from dawn until dusk.
